Intelligent UI Not Working? Troubleshooting Guide

Start by separating missing feature access from a failed response. Then check the device, network and specific control. These steps draw on OpenAI’s feature documentation and general ChatGPT troubleshooting guidance.

Common Intelligent UI Issues

  • No interactive UI: you receive text or code rather than controls.
  • Loading does not finish: the response stays on a spinner or partial interface.
  • A button does not work: the control fails, gives an error or does not change the result.
  • A component is blank: part of the answer does not render.

First check the supported modes and reasoning settings: use Chat, not Work or Voice, and Instant through Extra High rather than Pro reasoning. Check the rollout notes and Enterprise admin settings if applicable.

For a text-only answer, try a small, explicit task before treating it as an error. This suggested diagnostic prompt asks for a visible state change:

Create a small interactive counter directly in this conversation using Intelligent UI. Show a number starting at zero and buttons to increase, decrease and reset it. Use English labels and briefly explain what each button does.

Intelligent UI Not Showing on iPhone

  1. Update the official ChatGPT app through the App Store and reopen it. Use a new conversation in Chat.
  2. Check the reasoning setting and that you signed into the intended account.
  3. Open ChatGPT in your phone’s browser to compare the web experience with the app.
  4. If loading fails, compare Wi-Fi with another available network and check OpenAI service status.
  5. If the app crashes, follow OpenAI’s iOS failure guide. It recommends relaunching, then reinstalling if needed.

These are app and access checks, not a confirmed fix for a specific Intelligent UI iOS bug. Record the iPhone model, iOS version, app version and whether the same task works on the web.

Intelligent UI Not Working on Android

  1. Check that you use the ChatGPT app published by OpenAI and update it in Google Play.
  2. Restart the app, confirm your account and start a new Chat conversation with supported reasoning.
  3. Try the same simple prompt at chatgpt.com in a browser.
  4. If neither works, compare another network and check OpenAI’s status page.
  5. Share the Android version, phone model and app version with Support if the problem persists.

The official Android FAQ points to Google Play for current compatibility requirements. Avoid assuming that every missing widget is caused by Android itself.

Intelligent UI Not Showing on Web (Desktop)

For ChatGPT in a browser, check access and the prompt first. For a blank or frozen page, OpenAI’s general error guide recommends a refresh, a private window or another browser, and checking extensions or network filters.

  1. Refresh and start a new chat if the existing thread is long or stuck.
  2. Try a private browser window to compare a clean session.
  3. Temporarily disable a content-blocking extension or VPN if you use one, then retry.
  4. If needed, sign out and back in, or clear ChatGPT site data. Clearing data signs you out.
  5. For a desktop-app-only problem, compare the same account at chatgpt.com before changing the prompt.

Error Messages and Solutions

Message or symptomNext check
“Something went wrong.”Refresh, check service status, and compare a private window.
“A network error occurred.”Compare another network or browser and review VPN or proxy interference.
“There was a problem preparing your chat.”Check browser extensions that block scripts or modify the page.
Endless loading or a blank componentRetry in a new chat and compare another device. Report persistent rendering failures.
“This action couldn’t be completed.”Check whether the interface already advanced before retrying; report the control and its previous state.

The first three messages and loading guidance come from OpenAI’s general error documentation. The action-error example comes from our recorded quiz conversation; it is an observation, not an officially diagnosed cause.

Still Can’t Fix It?

Use the chat bubble at OpenAI’s Help Center. Include the prompt, error text, time and timezone, device, plan, reasoning setting, app or browser version, and what changed after each troubleshooting step.

A screenshot or recording helps show the failure. If Support requests browser logs or a HAR file, follow its instructions and remove sensitive information before sharing. See OpenAI’s support-request checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Intelligent UI not showing?

First check feature access, Chat mode and a supported reasoning setting. ChatGPT can also choose text because of the task. A missing widget alone is not proof of a service failure.

Can a prompt force Intelligent UI to turn on?

No. A prompt can request interaction, but cannot override feature availability, workspace restrictions or unsupported modes.

Does Pro reasoning support Intelligent UI?

No. OpenAI’s help page excludes the Pro reasoning option. A Pro subscription and the Pro reasoning option are different things.

What if it works on the web but not on my phone?

Compare the same account and a new Chat conversation. Record the phone model, operating system, app version and time of the failure. That information helps Support isolate an app-specific problem.

Should I keep clicking a failed button?

Check whether the visible state already changed before retrying. In our recorded quiz test, an action error appeared even though the next question had rendered.

How do I contact OpenAI Support?

Open help.openai.com and use the chat bubble. Share the exact error, time and timezone, account plan, device and app or browser version, and steps to reproduce the problem.
